Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) is a copolymer which is used in a host of Food and Drug Administration approved therapeutic devices, owing to its biodegradability and biocompatibility. PLGA are currently widely used in many fields, such as bone nail; coatings; lifting thread; absorbable suture; microspheres, gel for drug delivery etc.
PLGA5050:
•Composition: This copolymer has a 50:50 ratio of lactide to glycolide monomers.
•Degradation: Due to its high glycolide content, PLGA5050 degrades relatively quickly compared to other ratios. The higher glycolide proportion accelerates hydrolysis, leading to faster erosion times.
•Mechanical Strength: It tends to have lower mechanical strength because of its faster degradation rate. This can limit its use in applications requiring long-term structural integrity.
•Applications: PLGA5050 is often used in applications where rapid degradation is desired, such as short-term drug delivery systems, temporary implants, or scaffolds for tissue engineering that need to be replaced by natural tissue rapidly.
PLGA7525:
•Composition: With a 75:25 ratio, this copolymer has a higher percentage of lactide, contributing to its distinct properties.
•Degradation: PLGA7525 degrades more slowly than PLGA5050, providing a more controlled release profile over a longer period. The higher lactide content results in a more crystalline structure, slowing down the degradation process.
•Mechanical Strength: It possesses greater mechanical strength and durability due to its higher lactide content, making it suitable for applications that require support or longer-term implantation.
•Applications: Its properties make it ideal for extended-release drug delivery systems, implants that need to maintain their structure for a moderate duration, and as a scaffold material in tissue engineering where a balance between degradation and mechanical support is crucial.
